Wilderness Woodworkers creates natural wood tables and bowls with live edges and walking sticks. I researched and developed a logo for the small business within a week which captures the essence of the name and naturalness of the products being sold.
Concept
Wilderness refers to both the natural quality of the product and the shop’s location, which is about five minutes from Wilderness Battlefield, an important Virginia Civil War battlefield. I was inspired by historical typography, illustrations, and woodblock prints from that period and developed a few different directions for the logo based on those references.
I combined woodblock-style typography with hand-drawn cursive lettering and roughened the edges to create a rugged and antique style. The color palette includes a dark brown, referencing wood and the way black ink looks on worn parchment, and a Union blue.
