About the Typeface
Brandon Grotesque is a geometric, sans serif typeface designed in 2010 by HVD Fonts in Berlin, Germany. The family of fonts includes 12 Styles: 6 weights, each with an italic version. The type is based off of 1920s and 30s geometric sans serifs which had lots of character. As a result, Brandon Grotesque features a low x-height, sharp angles, rounded corners, and conical spurs.
Concept
I tried to think about unique ways of arranging the letterforms to evoke the charm of a modern typeface with a more historic influence. One set of sketches included a type-illustration of a coffee cup, which ended up being the inspiration for the vintage menu motif.
In order to highlight the forms and possibilities of the typeface, the entire publication only uses characters from Brandon Grotesque. This includes type illustrations, oversized forms which create negative spaces, and repeated letters which create interesting graphic elements.
Since this is a German-made typeface, German is used sparingly when it is readable. For instance: Stile instead of Style, and Kaffee instead of Coffee.
